How is Solvit Academy a safe and inclusive learning environment?
One of our main goals at Solvit Academy is to create a culture of positive self and group identity. As we say, we believe every child is a genius and can change the world. To authentically create a diverse and inclusive culture, we believe we must start by affirming the identity of children and what makes them special. Our school model is rooted in individualized learning that allows for equitable delivery of material. Children work at levels that are appropriate for their needs and we celebrate each milestone alongside them.
-
Affirm Identity
Children at Solvit Academy learn that their voice matters. We regularly affirm and honor who they are and what unique gifts they possess. By modeling that for our learners, they appreciate and respect others. Each child knows that they matter and is encouraged to be themselves.
-
No Teacher-Assigned Grades
A reduction in the adult’s role as an evaluator reduces the opportunity for unconscious bias. We do not assign grades, and our goal is to encourage and support each learner on their individual path. Guides use growth mindset language to affirm effort and avoid criticizing.
-
Personalized Learning for Equity
Individualized learning allows for us to meet children where they are and they can move through the material at their own pace. Offering personalized learning through adaptive software programs means we can close achievement gaps for disadvantaged learners.
-
Culture of Curiosity
We promise parents that their learner(s) will develop a deep respect for economic, political, and religious freedoms. Our job is not to teach children what to think, but how to think critically, respect others (even when we don't agree), and approach problems with curiosity.
-
Materials for Learning
We believe that the learners are best prepared for the future by immersion in a community where diverse world views are represented. Learners engage with various voices and perspectives to develop critical thinking skills, empathy, and a global perspective. Physical materials, such as books, toys, and other hands-on resources, reinforce this goal.
-
Physical and Emotional Safety
Physical and emotional safety is of utmost importance in our school community. We have a Social-Emotional Coaching Plan that clearly outlines what it means to interact respectfully with each other. As Owners, Guides, Parents, and Learners we have all agreed to a set of contracts that allow us to be a part of the community.
